Welcome back to Rabbits, Summer Term 1!
We have started a new topic called, ‘Can one person make a difference?’. In this topic we have been learning about influential people such as Florence Nightingale and Wilma Rudolph. We have been finding out about their life and seeing why and how they are so influential and what their impact is on life today. Halfway through the half term we will change to another topic called, ‘Awesome Artists: Is art always on a piece of paper?’. We will find out about different artists and try our own artwork in the style of these artists.
In science we will continue to look at plants. We started this before Easter and the children have loved planting their own plants at school and finding out about what they need to grow. The children have planted some plants inside and outside and have predicted which environment is best for the plants to grow in. The children provided some fantastic scientific reasoning behind their answers. We are still waiting to see the results of our predictions as the plants continue to grow.
In English, we will be exploring biographies as we build up to writing our own. We will look at Wilma Rudolph’s biography and will identify features used in the text and begin to start writing our own about Florence Nightingale.
We will continue to provide many reading opportunities for the children. We make sure that every child in the class reads their schoolbook every day of the school week whether that is it at home or at school. We will still have an afternoon a week focused on reading where the children will be able to read one to one to an adult as well as working in guided reading groups supported by an adult and engaging in various independent reading activities. The children will also engage with shared reading tasks through reading together as a whole class every day. A variety of books will also be read to the whole class daily as a reading for pleasure experience. Phonics will be taught every day and we will be following the phonics scheme, ‘Sounds Write’.
Mathematics will have a focus on measurement this half term. During our first few weeks back, we looked at numbers to 100 and we counted in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will then move onto looking at fractions. The children will find ½ and ¼ of objects, shapes, and quantities. We will then move on to time and money.
P.E will continue to take place on Thursday afternoons. Children will need to come to school in their outdoor P.E kit. Please make sure that your child is wearing the correct P.E kit which is their school jumper, a black pair of bottoms and trainers.
Keep checking our page to see photos of all the fun we will be having with our learning back at school!
