Welcome to Moles!

Welcome to Moles class!
After a well-deserved, fantastic summer break, we are delighted to be starting a brand-new year in Moles class! We have a very exciting topic to kick start our first term back! We will be asking the question ‘Why does the earth rock and roll?’. We will be looking at volcanoes, earthquakes, tornados and floods around the world and finding out what causes them. We will also take a look at various rocks and their properties as well as studying fossils to see what they can tell us about the past!
In English, we will be reading ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit which links closely to our topic. We will be focusing on our inference, deduction and vocabulary skills in our English lessons. We will be using the FANTASTICS, GRAMMARTASTICS AND BOOMTASTICS from the Write Stuff in our writing to make improvements and to make our work stand out! In addition to this, we will continue to have a big focus on reading and all children will have an opportunity to read with an adult in the class. Each week there will be a reading afternoon dedicated to reading and comprehension skills. Please ensure that your child has a reading book with them each day. We will continue to teach spellings using the ‘Sounds Write’ scheme which focuses on phonics and sounds.
In mathematics, we will be focusing on place value, number bonds and using the formal written methods for addition and subtraction. We will also be practising our times tables each week and it would be great if you could practise together at home as this will really support your child’s learning.
PE sessions will be on Tuesdays and Fridays this term. Please make sure your child comes to school wearing their correct PE kit.
Spellings will be given out each Friday ready for a test on the following Friday.
Keep checking back on our page to look at all of the amazing things that we are getting up to!
